The landscape Wadi Rum protected area is littered with massive mountains
coloured red, yellow and orange. The amazing panorama is a place where
you can become one with nature. As well as the magnificent views, the
eco-system of Wadi Rum offers over 2,000 species of wild plants and
flowers including many rare examples. More than 120 bird species have
been recorded including the Griffon Vulture, Fan-Tailed Raven, Bonelli’s
Eagle and Hume’s Tawny Owl.
Wadi Rum is also the place where Lawrence of Arabia based his operations
during the Arab Revolt of 1917-1918. Later Lawrence wrote a book about
the campaign entitled “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” which is a reference to
one of the landmarks in Wadi Rum.
Activities in Wadi Rum
A number of campsites have been set up in Wadi Rum offer good
facilities. Off-road 4x4 trips are very popular taking visitors to the
Seven Pillars of Wonder, site of prehistoric graffiti. Camel treks are
an alternative way to take in the spectacular scenery or for the more
adventurous, climbing and hiking is available. Early morning hot air
balloon rides offer a new perspective on this enchanting landscape as
you watch Wadi Rum’s magical sunrise.
Getting to Wadi Rum
Wadi Rum lies 180 miles south of Amman
and the route along the highway is clearly signposted. A more scenic but
long route would be along the Kings Highway passing through Petra.
