For years little more than a residential suburb of the ancient port city
of Jaffa, Tel Aviv rapidly prospered into Israel's largest city and
principal commercial and cultural hub following independence. A
cosmopolitan, vibrant city of 1 million inhabitants – spread over a
large area of contrasting suburban districts – it has a distinctly
Western feel by Middle Eastern standards. Far less "Orthodox" than the
capital, Jerusalem, the atmosphere is more familiar to European and
American visitors. Tel Aviv’s tourism has doubled to 2 million visitors
a year since the early 1980s and holidays here combine a lively
cosmopolitan atmosphere which 8 miles of beachfront, culture & art,
nightlife & dining and Jaffa, which was once an important seaport in
ancient times.
Getting There & Around
Ben Gurion Airport at Tel Aviv is the main point of entry to Israel
by air. Security is strict at this first class airport which also boasts
one of the worlds largest duty-free shopping malls. The train station at
the airport has good connections to the city or alternatively there is a
good bus service and taxis are available. Tel Aviv has a modern, regular
and widespread bus network or you can use a taxi which usually operate a
meter.
Weather
Tel Aviv has a Mediterranean climate with hot, humid summers, pleasant
springs and autumns and typically cool, wet winters. The average daily
