Mount Nebo overlooks the Dead Sea, Jordans River Valley, Jericho and the distant hills of Jerusalem. It became a place of pilgrimage for Christians. The Serpentine Cross which stands just outside the sanctuary on Mount Nebo is symbolic of the bronze serpent taken by Moses into the desert and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. In 2000, Pope John Paul II commemorated the start of the new millennium with a spiritual pilgrimage to the Holy Land and he started his visit with prayers at the basilica on Mount Nebo.
