Introducing Madaba

Head down the Kings Highway from Amman and you will find Madaba, one of the most memorable places in the Holy Land. This ancient town dates back to the Neolithic Period and is mentioned in the Old Testament (as Medeba). Its highlight is the Mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land in the Orthodox Church of Saint George dating back to the 6th century.

Between the 4th and 7th centuries AD, many such mosaics were produced in Madaba and well preserved examples can be found in their original locations in churches although some have been relocated in order to preserve them. Madaba is dubbed “The City of Mosaics”.
