Israel's capital and second largest city after Tel
Aviv is growing rapidly. It is very much the heart of the country as
well as a major focus for the religious followers of Judaism, Islam and
Christianity. The city falls into three distinct sections. Modern
suburbs sprawl for several mls. The city centre is fairly compact
(approximately 1 mile by 2) and itself comprises two parts. The New City
has all the trappings of any modern metropolis, including a compact
commercial centre some ¼ mile square forming the main shopping and
nightlife areas. But the most important, though smallest, section is the
walled Old City. The most significant sites are the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre for Christians, Temple Mount for Muslims and the West Wall for
Jews. Apart from the Sabbath, the city is usually busy, and numbers are
swelled by tourist crowds during religious festivals whether on hot
summer days or relatively cold winter nights around Christmas.
Getting There & Around
The nearest airport to Jerusalem is Ben Gurion International at Tel
Aviv (30 miles). A comprehensive bus service radiates from the
central bus station covering the city throughout the week but not during
Sabbath. Route 99 takes in many of the city's main sites with tickets
valid all day. Taxis operate all week but rates increase during Sabbath.
The railway station is just S of the city. The old city and the
commercial centre are best visited on foot.
