In Soma Bay, diving is
either from the shore or by boat and our preferred dive centre, Orca
Dive Club have an excellent house reef. There are a wide range of
virtually untouched sites suitable for any level of diver. Ras Abu Soma
offers regular sightings of octopus, morays, stonefish and turtles while
barracuda and eagle rays can often be seen in the blue. For the
underwater photographer, Tobia Arba is recommended.
Highlights of Soma Bay
The highlights of diving at Soma
Bay can be found if you head south past Safaga Island. The wreck of
the Salem Express. In 1991, this passenger ferry sank with huge loss of
life which makes it an eerie dive. The wreck itself is around 100m long
and is laying on its side just 12m below the surface dropping to a
maximum depth of 30m. Abu Kafan is possibly the best site in the area.
It is a superb wall dive with Gorgonians, dolphins, reef sharks plus
occasional encounters with hammerheads.
